Like Davido, Burna Boy, Wizkid, and his career mentor Mr Eazi - all of whom have risen the ranks of Nigerian pop into global stardom - Joeboy oozes charisma. He’s got a voice of honey, too. 2019's breakout “Baby” wooed listeners into its sunset-golden hues of delicate synth pads and digital flutes. The rising Afrobeats force is a dialect chameleon, mixing English R&B-isms with his native Yoruba and even Ghanaian Twi, which he loves for its melodic tone. “Baby” started a chain reaction of successful releases. “Beginning,” “Nobody,” and his feature on CKay’s “love nwantiti (ah ah ah)” kept the burners on in 2020.
