Check out Storyblocks here! storyblocks.com/tedforbesnnThis video is sponsored by Storyblocks. We thank them for their support!nnThe concept of an "establishing shot" is borrowed from film making. The establishing shot is the first shot of a film or scene that does 2 things. It establishes location and tells the viewer where the scene is taking place and secondly it sets the tone and mood of the scene.nnIn still photography, we see this same technique used in the photo essays by W Eugene Smith in the mid 20th century. He used the idea of the establishing shot to set the mood of the story and give context for the following photographs in the essay.nnHow can we use this in the work that we do. I ask you to think of the mediums we have at our disposal today and use techniques like this one to create a stronger narrative to the work that we do.nnThe W Eugene Smith book I use for reference: amzn.to/2XWKCYBnnCheck out my other videos:n• The World of W Eugene Smith www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bIudVlWo4Un• Why You Should Be Using Lightroom Mobile www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNoNlJKcSNUn• THIS was unexpected! www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuNnXUUSj_cn• Switching to an iPad Pro for Photo and Video Editing www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fRJXJCEIywn• Panasonic S1/S1R - Camera of the Year? www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3jv_6Ahyb8nnMusic is from Epidemic Sound goo.gl/v5wWKrnAoP T-Shirts aop.threadless.com/nNeed a website? squarespace.com/aopnnOn my channel you will find videos about photography, cinematography, post processing tutorials for Capture One, Lightroom and Photoshop, photo assignments that YOU can participate in, the Artist Series and more.
