Mark Essex was a 23-year-old Navy deserter who went on an eight-day killing spree in New Orleans, murdering nine people. Essex, once a promising Navy sailor from Kansas, became radicalized after facing racism in service and joining the Black Panthers. On December thirty first, 1972, he ambushed officers outside the New Orleans Police headquarters, killing one and wounding others. Over the next days, he hid in a church, shot civilians and on January 7, stormed the Howard Johnson’s Hotel, killing guests, staff, police and setting rooms on fire. A massive gunfight followed. Marine veteran, Lt. Col. Charles Pittman, stole a CH-46 helicopter, filled it with snipers and strafed the rooftop where Essex was pinned. After shouting Come and get me, Essex was killed in a hail of bullets.
