I recent travelled down to Dunsborough with my daughter for the weekend to camp and do some landscape photography.nnThe day we arrived the weather was changing with the wind originally coming from the south and then swinging around to the east. The changing wind made the usually locations a little harder, so we decided to head out to Sugarloaf Rock as we’d be protected from the winds.nnExploring a familiar location can be a great challenge for your photography as you look for different and unique compositions that are not so obvious. This is a great time of the year to be in the country exploring as the wildflowers including orchids and kangaroos paws are is full bloom with pinks, yellows, reds and blues, the bush comes alive.nnWe moved around to position ourselves to the south of the rock, protected from the wind and taking full advantage of the wispy clouds floating over the rock to the north.nnOn the front of the 17-35mm lens, attached to the Nikon D850 I added a circular polariser to cut through some of the glare on the surface of the water. I also added a 0.6 soft Grad Neutral Density Filter to bring down the amount of light from the sky.nnI had two challenges, even after using the filters to even up the light, the scene still had lots of contrast before the sun had fully set so I bracket the scene with 5 shots to ensure I had all the detail in the shadows and had protected the highlights. The second challenge was that I didn’t think I had the best composition, so I moved the tripod up the rocks for a better perspective looking down on the water and capturing the clouds in the sky which were now catching some beautiful pink colour.n nInterested in joining me on a workshop?
