Mike Hoolihan (Patricia Clarkson) is a detective who is called to investigate the murder of a young teacher who, the night before her death, gave a lecture on the mysteries of the universe. Investigating the case, she has to deal with the ex-boyfriend and the family with the victim's strange past. As she gets closer to the truth about what happened, she also gets closer to a greater truth, shaking certainties about her own life.
