Imlie, a young and smart village belle, is forced to marry a journalist after they seek shelter in a hut during heavy rains. On reaching the city, she realises that her husband is already married.

The story revolves around the life of a tribal girl, Imlie from a secluded region of Uttar Pradesh. Imlie is brought up by her mother and a father figure Satyakam Dadda, who is also tribal activist and leader.
A famous journalist from Delhi, Aditya Kumar Tripathi visits Pagdandia to interview Satyakam Dadda. One stormy night Imlie is forced to spend the night in the cottage with Aditya. Though both are innocent, the locals force Aditya to marry Imlie and take her to the city with him. Aditya previously engaged to his girlfriend Malini in the city, refuses to recognize the ceremony and asks Imlie to decide what she wants to do now. Imlie then comes to the city with Aditya where he places her in the care of an NGO.
When Aditya leaves Imlie at the NGO, Birju tells Imlie that she will have to face the wrath of the panchayat as her husband abandoned her. He forcefully tries to take Imlie back to Pagdandia but Aditya comes to her rescue. Aditya is left with no other option than to take Imlie to his house. When they reach home, Imlie introduces herself as a maid who accompanied Aditya to the city in search of some job. She wins everybody's heart in the family through her jolly and fun loving nature. Meanwhile, Aditya tries to tell Malini about what all happened at Pagdandia but he fails to do so.
The Tripathi's and the Chaturvedi's start preparations for Aditya and Malini's wedding celebration. Meanwhile, Imlie embark a new journey to search for her estranged father who left her mother years back in the village.
