Evacuees from the Russian-occupied southern Ukrainian city of Kherson were ferried across the Dnipro River on Sunday (October 23) as Russia-installed authorities continue evacuation efforts after warnings of a looming Ukrainian offensive to recapture the city. Kherson residents landing in the Russian-controlled town of Oleshky boarded repurposed school buses leaving the city. "Of course we are afraid for our lives," Vera, 44, told Reuters, who did not give her last name. "But I think everything will be OK. Kherson will hold out." The battle for Kherson, which has been under Russian control for almost the whole of the eight-month war, appears to be reaching a critical juncture as advancing Ukrainian forces threaten to pin Russian troops along the Dnipro's west bank. The Russian-installed leader of the region said earlier this week that Russia was planning to move an estimated 10,000 residents a day from Kherson and that Russia was preparing to take in residents in anticipation of Ukraine's counterattack.
